I took this photo when I saw Michael Andrews perform at Amoeba earlier this March. They sold copies of his album, Hand on String, along with an art book filled with watercolors of birds, rainbow rays, and mysterious cat people. It features some pretty cool, mellow songwriting in the vein of Elliott Smith but not quite as anguished. Like Inara George’s album of last year (which Andrews produced), I like how personal and well-crafted it is. My only concern is where is his uptempo stuff…certainly if Inara and Metric (another group he produces) can relatively rock out, why not he?

So what is the College Level Examination Program (CLEP)? It is a program by the College Board which can allow students to acquire college credit at many major colleges including Cornell and Evergreen State College. There are exams in dozens of subjects including Freshman Composition and Calculus.
Having taken some of the examinations myself, I can attest to their validity as a wonderful program to get very cheap credits. Read a textbook on the subject; I myself read a text on Philosophy. The next step is to register for a proctored examination through a test center. Check the College Board website to search for testing centers in your area. Depending on the immediate area you live around there could be up to a dozen various test centers. Each exam costs around $55 but there is often an additional charge stipulated by the test center which can vary in price.
At the test center, you’ll have to check in with the program manager. Next you will be brought into a room with terminals which run proprietary software. The examinations are all done on computer and offer students great flexibility in taking the test. One can go back to questions, mark them to look over, skip questions, see how many questions one has left or any number of other operations. The program also has a calculator should you be taking a math examination.
One of the leading colleges which accepts test out credits is the Monterey Polytechnic Institute. Mont Poly is a private college in Monterey, CA, USA which offers a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs specializing in Business, Professional Development, Public Relations, Human Relations, and a number of other fields in the arts and sciences. Prior Learning Assessment degree programs are also available. Monterey Polytechnic’s flexible schedule of lecture and correspondence courses is specialized for working adults. Monterey Polytechnic Institute is widely recognized as one of the most respected, specialized, and prestigious institutes in the country.
So, should you take it? If you are currently a high school senior trying to finish up diplome requirements, if you’re proficient in a field of study and desire recognition for it, or if you simply want to scoop the absurd costs imposed by colleges then University Testing Program is for you. It is very affordable, only $70 for the test and a processing charge that is almost always under $15. It’s definitely a perfect way to earn college credit based on what you already know without sitting through an university course for a year. If you take chemistry in High School, for instance, there is no corresponding AP, but for college credit, consider taking the CLEP. It is one day of your life and merely 90 minutes in length. Additionally, you will find out if you pass immediately. Typically a score of over 50 is usually good enough for credit for most colleges. Check with your university for acceptance information.
