Save the Date

Sometimes life isn’t fair.

All last year I’ve been waiting to go see Inara George’s new group The Bird and The Bee. I made a mental note that she was playing the Troubadour with Mike Andrews. Great, among my favorite local artists who are starting to have some national presence.

All last year I’ve also been waiting to go to see John Adams, one of the great living American composers. I’ve had the tickets for while since I’m an LA Phil subscriber, and his stuff is very broad and entertaining and will attract an interesting crowd. It doesn’t hurt that he’ll be conducting and I have great seats.

And even though I wasn’t going to buy a ticket, Hilary Hahn will be in town for a recital. She is probably the best violinist of our generation, just perfection. When I found out she was playing Amoeba for free, I thought that was great. I can see her, maybe not ideally, but for free.

And there you have it, three concerts that I would take time out of my life to go to. Except I can only go to one since they are all taking place on Tuesday evening, January 23rd. However, if you can, you should go to one of them. I’ll be at John Adams.

But all of that is just foreplay since the following Sunday is the west coast premiere of Steve Reich’s Daniel Variations. And I ain’t missing that one for no one.
