James Yorkston

Year of the Leopard

James Yorkston’s latets album, Year of the Leopard, is an interesting mix of pop and minimalism. The minimalism of Woozy With Cider is reminiscent of Glass’ opera Einstein on the Beach, especially with the spoken word aspect. Yorkston even gives the song a little maracas pulse like Steve Reich.

The minimalism of Summer Song reminds me of the Velvet Underground’s Heroin, but way more…summery. We get the rather simple elegant pulsed guitar chord. Instead of Heroin’s tempo burst, we get a burst of strings.
