Frankel of Los Angeles

Frankel

I am usually very suspect of suspended cymbal usage in songs. It’s a technique you always see in manipulative propaganda like movie trailers and reality TV…If you want to make something seem dramatic that has absolutely zero inherent drama, have someone hit a suspended cymbal to create a completely unearned musical climax.

This new song, Tooth Decay, redefines the term “overusing suspended cymbal.” Virtually every downbeat features the instrument. While normally I’d call this lazy songwriting, the pervasiveness of the cymbal makes it drop to the background in a way that is almost endearing. I half listen to the song just to marvel at the bold, almost comical, way it underlines everything and nothing.

Over the next month, Frankel (aka Michael Orendy) appears in various venues around LA, including my favorite radio station KXLU.
