Three Amazing Things

Here are some things you may find amazing:

Passage

1. I remember the days of Mario, when exploration and discovery meant whimsy and fantasy. Whenever someone mentions the word video game today, it conjures up an image of shooting zombies, killing Nazis, combating terrorism, or any combination thereof. Passage reverts video games back to its basic beauty, which must be played to its very end in order to discover. I repeat, keep playing and you’ll start to see why this is the video game people say will change the industry.

2. If a great musician played classical music in a forest and no one was around to hear it, would that be any different from mainstream America? Check out what the Washington Post found out in its experimental study.

For those of you who are lazy, they basically put Joshua Bell, the Brad Pitt of classical violinists, in a crowded walkway and shot video of how people reacted. Most didn’t. In fact, out of the hundred or so people that passed by during the hour Bell was there, only a handful who paid any noticeable attention to him. And out of those, only one actually recognized who he was.

Let’s back track and assume, well, everyone is busy and therefore a musical performer is not at the top of their list of things to pay attention to on their way to work. This is only fair since I’m sure many of the people might have paid attention if they were attending a concert or were on a date, etc. But what if instead we substituted Joshua Bell with Beyonce or Justin Timberlake doing renditions of their hits. I’m sure that more people would have taken notice. In fact, crowd control might have become an issue, because they are celebrities and they could be grocery shopping and attract a throng.

My point is that marketing seems to precede any notion of quality. If anything has quality, it usually has the marketing ability to tell people about it. If not, well, the makers of it need to earn more money by improving the quality of their product until they earn enough money to tell people they have something of quality.

3. The folks over at Ninja Tune have released this track. Listen to it.
