Widmung

Van Cliburn

Just thought I’d post a song which is one of the most beautiful ever. It’s called Widmung, and was written by Robert Schumann as his wedding to Clara Wieck was approaching.

While the original contains all the trappings of Romanticism (love poetry, sighing melody, grand climax), I prefer the more abstract “cover” version by Franz Liszt. Liszt was really great at taking orchestral works and making them suitable for ordinary people to play at the piano. In Widmung, he takes the vocal part and incorporates it into the piano accompaniment (that dotted rhythm that is instantly recognizable).
