Two to Tango

Astor Piazzolla

Astor Piazzolla is the guy most associated with the musical style Tango. As with much of musical exploration, my exposure to him came from watching film, in my case the Carlos Saura film Tango.

Piazzolla’s music is featured in the movie as well as original music by a pianist composer who played with Piazzolla, Lalo Schifrin. Schifrin, of course, has had a storied career on his own as a performer with Dizzy Gillespie and his memorable scores such as the Mission:Impossible theme, Enter the Dragon, all the way up to the recent Rush Hour films.¬† Schifrin’s tangos feel authentic, but Piazzolla’s were both spirited as well as intellectually sound. He incorporated fugue and much of the music takes a modernist approach to tonality.

I highly recommend the movie Tango, which is amazingly post-modernist, and features Mia Maestro who later would go on to English language projects like the TV show Alias and cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, who shot Bertolucci’s films The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, and The Last Emperor among others.

More importantly, I highly recommend listening the Piazzolla’s amazing music.
