The Real Jon Chu

Jon Chu

It takes a uniquely talented artist to be highly regarded in not one but two different mediums. Jon Chu happens to front three mediums with distinction.

Jon Chu is probably most well known as the director of Step Up 2, a moderate hit at $158 million worldwide, and the upcoming Step Up 3D. According to the New York Times, he was mentored early on by Steven Spielberg after graduating from USC with an amazing msuical short film, When the Kids are Away.

Moreover, Jon Chu also co-founded two amazing dance crews, LXD & ACDC. I suppose that’s not surprising give that he is known as a film director of musicals. Naturally choreo is a big part of that.

Jon Chu of The Morning Benders
And Jon Chu is part of the indie band The Morning Benders? Well, Wikipedia currently says, “Jonathan M. “Jon” Chu (born November 1, 1979) is an American film director and screenwriter. He is most notably a member of the popular indie music band, the Morning Benders, and has been on tour with the likes of Grizzly Bear and Yeasayer.” I seriously doubt that however. The Jon Chu of the band is nowhere near the extrovert hype man that is Jon Chu the filmmaker. But I wouldn’t be bringing this up unless I actually liked The Morning Benders.

Their song, Excuses, is available for free download from their website along with a cool little video. In case you were wondering, the front man is Chris Chu, Jon’s older brother.
